Rewards

The Smarter Goal framework talks about rewards, but this deserves its own focus because it’s critical for resilience, the ability to keep going and push through. While working towards goals that are meaningful is in itself rewarding, often, we achieve a goal and immediately move the goalpost to the next thing. If you’re a solopreneur or running a small team, think of yourself as both the boss and the team. Would you want a boss who never paused to say “well done” or never rewarded you for the work you’ve completed? You’d lose motivation and feel undervalued.

This is your opportunity to value yourself and your team. Rewards don’t have to be grand gestures—sometimes small celebrations are enough. They can be financial, like taking an extra drawing from your business or paying staff a bonus. They can be experiences, like a dinner out, a spa treatment, or simply taking time to pause and reflect. You might create a visual reminder of your achievement, like putting a media clipping or certificate on the fridge. The key is to acknowledge your effort, pause, and celebrate.

We want to be a beautiful, supportive boss to ourselves, cheering ourselves on. Recognising even small achievements nurtures our nervous system, reinforces positive biofeedback, and motivates continued effort. Most people never set goals, and those who do rarely follow through—so acknowledging your wins, no matter the size, is essential.
